Indian people generally wear outfits that showcase their rich regional culture which may be salwar in Delhi, dhoti in Patna or Lungi in Chennai. India is the land of diversity and so this difference is exhibited by means of clothing also. The change in fashion trends in different regions of India stems from the fact that on one side regional and cultural traditions differ whereas on the other side historical influences and climatic conditions differ. All these factors result in distinct styles and preferences in clothing that exhibit a medley of colours, fabrics, silhouettes and drapes that change almost every few hundred kilometres.
As far as the latest fashion trend in the present year of 2025 is concerned, region-wise it can be enumerated thus:
Fashion Trend in North India
In North India, besides exhibiting rich cultural elegance in clothing it is also about bling and swag. Men are inclined towards Kurtas and Sherwanis coupled with shirts and trousers besides traditional garments like dhoti as per the occasion and dress code concerned, but still the rich brocades of Delhi, colourful turbans of Punjab, headgear of Rajasthan and elegant kurtas of Uttar Pradesh still dominate the trending fashion in 2025.
When it comes to wedding attire ,grooms in general prefer heavily embroidered Kurta sets coupled with Kalgi adorned turbans (in case of Punjabi groom) and string of pearls. For low-key events, men prefer a brocade Nehru jacket set as their most preferred attire.
Fashion Trend in South India
When it comes to South India, the vibe for people is minimal in contrast to North India and is also simple and straight. In the case of people residing in Karnataka, the combination of Mundu (dhoti) and shirt is the preferred option with a thin golden border, as per their particular preference. People living in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also prefer Veshti (dhoti) and shirts, but sometimes prefer white kurta in place of shirts.
When it comes to wedding attire then a silk dhoti with golden zari work with matching kurta or shirt coupled with angavastram which is a long scarf draped over the shoulder is the preferred choice or else silk sherwani with golden jewellery work is also in demand.
Fashion Trend in East India:
In Eastern India, there is a fusion of influences right from tribal culture to royal culture. In West Bengal people like to wear Dhoti and Kurta, In Odisha, people prefer patta (a short version of dhoti) often coupled with ikat weaves. In Assam, the preference is for ‘Mekhela Chador’ often in silk fabric which is a two-piece garment- one skirt-like lower piece popularly called as ‘Mekhela’ and an upper piece called as ‘Chador’.
Fashion Trend in western India
In Western India, and in particular in Gujarat it is the mirror work and bandhani prints that are trending. People adore things that are bright and bold and prefer yellow kurta jacket sets and pink turbans besides short angled jackets that are worn over the kurta. In Maharashtra, people prefer earthy hues and simple silhouettes and like to wear dhoti and a turban in a distinctive style and during special occasions like to wear a silk kurta with silk shawl having rich shades of purple and green for an elegance feel.
Northern India Wedding Attire for Men
The grooms of Northern India believe in fascinating others with their wedding dress and hence ‘Achkan Style Sherwani’ is the most preferred choice due to its regal version of the normal sherwani. This Achkan-style sherwani has intricate work of golden embroidery. People equally prefer churidar pants with a matching turban coupled with a pearl necklace.
Southern India Wedding Attire for Men
South Indian families keep the clothing of grooms simple and classic for wedding purposes by opting for white or off-white silk dhoti with kurta coupled with angavastram which adds a regal elegance followed by silk turban but for Engagement or Reception party people prefer simple kurta – pyjama appearance with a short jacket or a waistcoat as per the preference which makes the attire traditional and contemporary.
Eastern India Wedding Attire for Men
The Eastern side of the people are a bit more traditional in their attire and hence grooms also stick to traditional clothing like Benarasi silk kurta or Assamese Sherwani. The dhoti may either be of cotton weave or its silk version as per the preference. In this region, unique accessories play a pivotal role in enhancing the overall personality of the groom as in Assam-a woven scarf, in West Bengal-a conical headgear, and in Odhisa –a triangular turban.
Western India Wedding Attire for Men
The signature style of Western Indian grooms comes with a lot of mirror and embroidery work having vibrant colours to make the groom an iconic personality. The sherwani of grooms have very heavy work coupled with matching turban and pointed-toe shoes. In Maharashtra, the grooms generally prefer beige or white kurta in combination with dhoti besides colourful photos and a pearl necklace for showcasing their personality, but the real showstopper is the ‘Mundavalya’ which is a delicate string of pearls worn on the forehead by both the bride and groom to symbolize the togetherness and unbreakable bond between the two.
Conclusion
Region-wise there may be differences in general draping style and wedding attire of men in 2025 along with the accessories preference due to cultural and traditional differences coupled with the difference due to the effect of climate, but if we keep aside the basic difference the soul of Indian clothing remains the same where people enjoy their tradition and culture and keep their attire simple or elegant as per the requirement. Indians believe in Unity in Diversity and so their dressing style or signature style represents the overall dressing style of Indian culture which keeps the people united on the global platform. Indians believe that the character of a person makes a person gentle and so the dressing style should be such that the attire should convey that the people over here are gentle and represent the Indian culture.
